A lot of people are wondering how to respond in light of the current devastation in haiti. One such way is to donate or support Mennonite Central Committe (MCC).
(MCC) is responding to the earthquake that struck Haiti January 12, the largest in more than 200 years. MCC’s response will be at least $1 million U.S. or $1.03 million Cdn. and will provide immediate shelter, food and emergency supplies, as well as trauma healing and other long-term recovery needs. You can help through prayer for the people of Haiti and by donating to MCC’s Haiti Earthquake appeal. Give online by clicking here, by check to the MCC office nearest you, or by phone toll free: 1-888-563-4676.
There are three podcasts and a video up on the website that can be downloaded and distributed.
Additionally MCC is starting to get inquiries of people wanting to volunteer in Haiti. MCC is not sending new personnel now but we are documenting basic information from people who offer to help. The three most important criteria of volunteers are:
French/Creole language skills
Experience in Haiti
Trauma/healing counseling experience
The MCC Latin America/Caribbean program staff are working to assemble "work-and-learn" teams of short term volunteers. At that point, these people (and others who may not have these qualifications) may be contacted to go serve in Haiti. If you come across anyone who is interested in volunteering, please call the number above.
